The Carnival Queen and the Ostrich.

Jonny Roberts claims that his sister was a Carnival Queen and would be paraded through the streets of neighbouring towns, on the bonnet of their family car.

He would follow the precession, behind the car, dressed as a cowboy riding an ostrich. With yellow tights on his scrawney legs and marigold gloves on his feet, he would entertain the crowd by nibbling the paper flowers on the back of the car.

This body of work, that combines plaster constructions and ‘ready made’ objects, plays with the relationships between abstract and figurative sculpture, gender representations and perceptions of intelligent art.

Classical forms in sculpture, iconic imagery of the female form and saucy comic postcards combine to create figurative sculpture that exists only within your own mind.
